In depth

Tax returns for hairdressers and beauty therapists: what to know

Whether you rent a chair, run a mobile business or own a salon, these are the tax rules that matter most.

Am I employed or self-employed if I rent a chair?

If you rent a chair or room, set your own prices and keep your takings, you are normally self-employed. You file your own return and pay tax on your profit. If the salon sets your hours and pays you a wage, you are an employee and the salon handles your tax.

Which costs can I claim?

Chair or room rent, products, tools, equipment, towels and uniforms, insurance, training courses and qualifications, advertising, card machine fees, accountancy fees and travel for mobile work. Your tips are taxable income and must be included.

Do I pay tax on tips and cash payments?

Yes. Tips you keep, and all cash and card payments from clients, count as income. Using a booking system and a card reader makes your records simpler and more accurate.

When must I register for VAT?

You must register if your taxable turnover goes above £90,000 in any 12 months. Salon owners can reach this faster with several staff. Register on time to avoid penalties.
